William Darrell Ballew (Papa Bear & Tiny), age 55, of Woodstock, Georgia passed unexpectedly Thursday, February 11,2021. Mr. Ballew was a Commercial Driver he drove for Domino's Pizza for over 20 years, loved fishing, mechanic on cars and was an avid collector. Mr. Ballew loved being around his friends and tinkering on things. Mr. Ballew had found a passion for Young Living Essential Oils and looked forward to getting his package each month. Catherine ‘Cathy’ Ann Waters, 72, of Ball Ground, GA, formally of Geneseo, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at her home. Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.Cathy was born April 19, 1948, the daughter of LeRoy and Valeska (Patterson) Combs. She graduated from Moline High School in 1966.
Sarah Virginia Bell, 65, died peacefully on December 28, 2020 in Watkinsville, GA. Born in Atlanta, GA to the late Charles Woodrow Bell and Sarah Molene Holmes Bell, Sarah graduated North Fulton High School in 1973. She earned degrees in English from Furman University (1977) and the University of Georgia, completing her Ph.D. in 1989 with a dissertation on William Faulkner.
Walter Griffin (born August 1, 1937) is an American poet who lived in East Point, Georgia for decades and after long illness, died peacefully at his home on November 30, 2020 at the age of 83. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and father-in-law. He is the author of ten collections of poetry and his work has appeared in more than 400 national and international publications. Born Jasper (Jay) Walter Griffin in Wilmington Delaware, he is the only son of William Samuel Griffin and Nina Opal Blalock.
Susan Oxley Gordon, 74, of Newnan, GA passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children on December 20, 2020, at Piedmont Hospital Newnan. She is survived by son Jeff Gordon (Rachel) and daughters Karin Gordon and Jenny Thomas (Joel); grandchildren: Schyler Maxwell, Tucker Thomas, Sawyer Thomas, Madelyn Gordon, Evelyn Gordon, and James Gordon; great granddaughter Stella Maxwell, and her doggie companion Gabby as well as siblings, sisters in law, and nieces and nephew. She also leaves to cherish her memory all the children that were blessed with one of her “Bunny Cakes” over the years. She is preceded in death by her husband Douglas Gordon, grandson Timothy Thomas, and her parents Dick and Louise Oxley.
David Earl Durst, age 58, of Jasper, passed away Sunday, November 8th, 2020 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. He was born October 3rd, 1962 to John Edward & Eleanor Durst in Cleveland, Ohio. He proudly served his country in the United States Army & Ohio National Guard for 13 years. He was a Boy Scouts of America Scout Master for 15 years.

Wanda Sue Mcguirt was born on July 28,1958 in Cartersville GA at Howell - Quillia hospital. She was the 4th child born to Annie Lee Thomas and Robert T. Hallman.In her earlier years Wanda married Johnny Bailey and from that marriage was born, James Waylon Bailey and Marshal Lee Bailey.Wanda was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She took her membership with the VFW very seriously and made a point to be involved as much as she could. Wanda was a Christian woman that believed in GOD and the unconditional love that he stands for.Later in her life, years after her divorce from her first marriage, Wanda re-married her life long best friend Ricky Mcguirt on October 4, 2000.

She married the love of her life and husband of 63 years, Richard Alfred Cyr on September 9, 1950 and was the beloved mother to 8 children. Monday afternoon, August 31, 2020, Michael Gordon Woodall, loving husband, father, son, and friend, passed away at Piedmont Mountainside hospital at the age of 58. He passed away in the company of his wife Barbara Woodall, daughter Maxie Woodall, and father Gary Woodall. Michael was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 10, 1963 to Gary and Shirley Woodall. He married his wife Barbara Woodall, together they adopted and raised their daughter Maxie Woodall. Michael was a very caring person always willing to help out when you needed it. He volunteered at Grandview fire department for 5 years and worked as former operations chief and captain at Bent Tree Public safety for 8 years. In his free time he loved to do woodwork, hunt, and spend time with his family. Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughter, Maxie, Brothers, Barry and Derek, father, Gary, and several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.We are honored the family is having a memorial service this Friday, September 4, 2020. here at our funeral home. She was the best care taker of her family and friends. She also was a great friend to all of her coworkers at the Canton Home Depot where she worked for 12 years. Antoinette Spadafino Reda, lovingly known as Ann, Mom, Mema and Auntie Ann, peacefully gained her Heavenly Angel Wings on Tuesday, August 4th at 1:40 a.m. For 79 years, she donned her Earthly Angel Wings as anyone who ever knew her would attest to. Born August 2nd, 1941 in the Bronx, NY to Grace and Joseph Spadafino, she was a loving sister to Joe, Andy and Marie. The cherished role of Mother was fulfilled when Sandi & R.J. were born. Her joy was her family and her love for them was immense. She moved to Atlanta from Mt. Kisco, NY in 1996, following Sandi & Jim’s wedding in 1995. She beamed with pride last year as R.J. married Dani, who she loved like a daughter. Her absolute treasures were her 3 grandchildren, Jimmy, Jenna and Jillian. She doted on them from the second they were born. Ann could often be found at school functions and sporting events in the stands cheering her “Munchkins” on and when she couldn’t attend, they could always count on a text from Mema after saying how proud she was of them. From her famous pancakes, spinach quiche, entire weekend sleepovers, movie nights and quests for the newest Beanie Boo, to her greeting Jimmy at the top of the stairs when he parked his Jet-ski in her garage with a Gatorade toss, everything was always better at Mema’s house. Ann was never defined by the illnesses that tried many times to shorten her time with us. She courageously and valiantly fought with her support system right beside her every step of the way. She showed up for appointments and treatments always beautifully dressed with a smile on her face and kind word for every single person who took care of her.

The love of her life were her children Aidan, River, and Stormie. She will forever be their guardian angel. Rex was born in Tate Georgia on September 7, 1966. He passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2020 after a long battle with lung cancer. He passed at home in Jasper Georgia peacefully. Rex was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, to so many, and if you had the pleasure of meeting him you were sure to leave with memories that make you laugh. He enjoyed social events and being surrounded by friends and family. Judy Cloyes passed away July, 15, 2020 at the Sonshine Manor Personal Care Home in Ellijay, Georgia. She was 76 years of age. A native of Waycross, Georgia, she graduated from Ware County High School where she was Homecoming Queen in 1961. She was preceded in death by her father, Lemuel A. Purdom and mother Dorothy May (McQuaig) Purdom. Left to grieve her loss include her husband Bob (Jasper, GA), sons Rusty, wife Karen, and grandsons Flynn and Jude (Austin, TX); Steve, wife Kristin and grandson Colin (Portland, OR); daughter Mindy and husband Eric, grandchildren Ellianna, Ceanna, and Cooper (Glen Allen, VA); sisters Sandra, husband Leonard, (Brentwood, CA), Barbara (Waycross, GA), brother, Larry, wife Eloise, (Waycross, GA), and cousins Patricia McCarthy (Waycross, Ga) and Jennifer Poulan, husband Dorian (Jacksonville, Fla). While living on St Simons Island, Judy met and married Ensign Bob Cloyes USN, in June 1967 and began a thirty-one year career as a Navy wife. Together they enjoyed duty stations in San Diego, CA (twice), Brunswick, GA, Virginia Beach, VA (three times), Newport, RI, Monterey, CA, and Keflavik, Iceland. While raising their children Judy experienced the tremendous bond of both squadron and ship’s company wives’ groups. Retirement began in 1997 from Navy life for Bob, and for Judy from the administrative offices of the Virginia Beach School System. Since then they have lived in El Cajon, CA; Sequim, WA; Blackshear, GA, and Jasper, GA. settling in the Bent Tree Community. Judy has been a life-long Episcopalian. She grew up in Grace Episcopal Church in Waycross, GA and concluded in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family in Jasper, GA. She converted Bob in 1967 and encouraged his participation in every Episcopal Church along the way. For all, it has been a time of mourning since she left this world. Be assured she continues to be kind, gracious, and loving in the Lord’s Kingdom as she has been a blessing here on Earth. George Lloyd Smith Obituary George Lloyd Smith was born June 5, 1949 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Father Lloyd Ernest Smith and Mother Jeanette Ann Vertz. He had 1 brother, Charles and 3 sisters, Catherine, Yvonne & Cindy. George served in the United States Navy for 8 years. He received a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Saginaw State University in Michigan. After leaving the Navy, he and Linda moved to Michigan where he worked for Consumers Energy and Crane Nuclear, which ultimately brought him to Georgia. George and Linda Kay PetersenSmith were married for 48 years. They have three sons, Tony, Rob and David. Tony is married to Patsy, they have two children, Maddie and Max and live in Chapel Hill, NC. Rob is married to Heather, they also have two children, Amara and Liam and live in St. Charles, IL. David lives with his life partner, Nueng in Bangkok, Thailand. George and Linda moved to their dream home here in Jasper three years ago. He died peacefully at home July, 3, 2020. The family has chosen to have a celebration of life in the future when David & Nueng are able to return from Thailand. The word “cannot” was not a part of George’s vocabulary. Always an engineer at heart, he often enjoyed repairing anything that was broken. He was happy to do it and even more excited to teach his children and/or grandchildren how to fix anything broken. We know many of you reading this never had the privilege of knowing George. We want you to know you missed a good human. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Until tomorrow George.
Patrick W. Stanfield Born May 9, 1938 and passed June 29, 2020. Patrick was born in Tate, Georgia to Ermen and Ruby Stanfield on May 9, 1938. Patrick was married to Sharon Kaiser on November 18, 1983. He was the love of her life. They had three children Aletitia, Dawn, and Amanda. Patrick loved to raise chickens and he liked to hunt. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed in California. Patrick was loved dearly by his family and may he rest in peace.
Michael Knight Davis Big Canoe, GA- Michael Knight Davis died peacefully at home on June 30, 2020. He was born on January 4, 1941 to Dr. John Thomas Davis and Nell Balcome Davis in Walhalla, SC. He was a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology and a member of Phi Delta Fraternity. On July 14,1966 he married Kathryn Antoinette Davis. A devoted husband and father, he took great joy in providing a loving home for his family. He was a systems analyst and consultant in his working years and served as Chief Financial Officer for Consulting Services Inc. before his retirement in 2000. His retirement was interrupted when he chose to serve as a tax consultant with H&R Block for eight years. He had a deep appreciation of nature and enjoyed serving on the Mountain Stewards and Big Canoe Trail Committee. He discovered his hidden artistic talent in the Big Canoe artist club and travelled overseas to find further artistic inspiration. His life was an adventure that carried him from a small country town to the big city and he later settled in the North Georgia mountains. We take comfort knowing he is at peace, and he will forever live in our hearts. Survivors include his wife, Kay, his children Michelle Harvey, Dr. Michael K. Davis, Jr., Maj. Anthony (Tony) Davis, and seven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brothers, John T. Davis, Dr. Edward Davis and by his parents. Patrick Carl Bohana passed away peacefully June 25th at age 76. Pat will fondly be remembered by friends and family as a person who lived his life in the service of others. After serving honorably for 8 years in the USAF from 1961-1969 his life became wholly dedicated to the family he would build, starting with his loving wife Dianne. Together they lived a life spanning 40 years filled with love, compassion, generosity, and selflessness. Patrick found great success in his career in sales, but it was the adventure that he took his family on that he will be remembered for most. From Maryland to Singapore, Phuket to California, he always wanted the very best for his family and to be there to lend an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or arms to wrap around us. No matter the ups and downs, Patrick was always the steady hand that kept us all moving forward and striving to be the very best we could. He never complained, never asked for anything from anyone, and always did his absolute best to do right by people. He was boisterous and funny with the most wonderful smile and laugh recognized by all that knew him. Patrick leaves behind his wife Dianne, their two children Carolyn and Michael, grandchildren James and Caitlynn, sisters Mary and Luci, and brother Chuck. While he may have been called home, we find comfort in knowing that he will remain a part of us and that we will see him again.
Penelope Louise Peppers born March 23, 1948 and passed on June 23, 2020. Penelope has lived in the Jasper area for 16 years and moved here from Sharpsburg, Georgia and preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Mamie Duke and her brother Jimmy Duke. Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years Jerry D. Peppers, children Cindy Gates and husband Dave Gates, Shelly Peppers and husband Jimmy Berry, brother Bill Duke and his wife Carol. Grandchildren of Penelope include Hayley Willis and her husband Skyler Willis, Cotie Hoover, Tori McDaniels and her husband Tate, and Tyler Gates. Great Grandchildren include Emma Willis and Macie McDaniels. Great Grandchildren include Emma Willis and Macie McDaniels.Visitation will be held this Saturday, June 27 at 1:00 p.m. and the memorial service will follow at our chapel beginning at 3:00 p.m.The family has requested that any donations be made to American Red Cross or The Leukemia Society in lieu of flowers.
Thomas Allen Dennard, 71, a recent resident in Bent Tree of Jasper, Georgia, passed away by heart attack Wednesday, June 17, 2020. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 27, 1948, to the late Tom L. and Pearly Mae Dennard. Surviving children are April, Angela, Tommy, Ryan, & Johnny. He was a humble Christian who loved his family & served the Lord. He was cremated on Friday June 19, 2020 witnessed by eldest daughter April. April Billings
Heinz was born January 23, 1944 in Wuerzburg, Germany. We were married in 1966 and five years later his employment brought Heinz, me and his young daughter to the United States. In his line of work Heinz travelled extensively throughout the United States where he met many people and made life-long friends. He especially enjoyed motorcycle touring with his friends both in the United States and Europe and often times served as tour guide -- a service that generated many fond memories and appreciation from his friends. As a couple we enjoyed 'vintage car' touring with our friends where we oftentimes made memorable stops at various mountain functions, restaurants and wineries. Heinz cherished his life-long friends and received their heartfelt friendship in return. He truly was a good friend to many and a beloved husband to me. Your Loving Wife, Hannelore
Longtime Burnsville resident, Retired Lt. Col. Clarence H. Bush Jr., 90, died peacefully at Presbyterian Village in Austell, Georgia June 14, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Elsie Marie Bush; daughters Lea Foster and husband Jerry and Jody Vise and husband Jon; 5 grandsons, Zac, Aaron & Josh Foster and Seth & Jared Vise; and 8 great grandchildren. Born in Rich Patch, Virginia, February 20, 1930, Clarence joined the Army Air Corps in 1948. His career began as a hurricane hunter in Bermuda where he brought his bride, Elsie, after their wedding December 25, 1950. Together they traveled the world for 31 years as Clarence served in the Air Weather Service of the Air Force. Once retired, they made Burnsville their home and shared the beauty of the area with their extended family until 2014 when they moved to Atlanta to be closer to family. He is now in his heavenly home with his Savior Jesus Christ. A memorial service will be held in Burnsville later in the year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Foundation, or Compassion International.
